the birth of sisyphus:1983
the workman of today works every day in his life at the same tasks, and this fate is no less absurd. but it is tragic only at the rare moments when it becomes conscious. sisyphus, proletarian of the gods, powerless and rebellious, knows the whole extent of his wretched condition: it is what he thinks of during his descent. the lucidity that was to constitute his torture at the same time crowns his victory. there is no fate that cannot be surmounted by scorn.
― albert camus,
born out of frustration of understanding menial routine, i began this project originally in 2013 intended as a short film. over the course of the years, it turned into more. still images were then created with the character of sisyphus:1983.
1983 represents the Y generation. sisyphus:1983 grew into somewhat of a caricature of myself. mundane routine without color, taste, or smell. every waking life situation was represented by sisyphus:1983, eventually taking over as a completely surreal reality. soon, all my creative means led back to this. inevitably we are all sisyphus:1983. the juxtaposition of the universe next to a single human existence is as we are all, microscopic and minimal.
